Gisteravond speelde FC Groningen haar 3e thuiswedstrijd op rij. Het duel, waarbij FC Volendam de tegenstander was, moest duidelijk maken welke van de twee ploegen er door zou gaan naar de kwartfinales van de KNVB beker.
FC Groningen was vanaf de aftrap de betere ploeg en wist een aantal keren gevaarlijk voor het doel van Volendam te komen. Het duurde echter wel even voordat het eerste doelpunt werd gescoord; één minuut voor rust wist Mahi uit een bijna onmogelijke hoek de bal in het doel te werken 1-0.
Ook na de rust kwam FC Groningen niet in de problemen. De voorsprong werd in de 71ste minuut uitgebreid door een doelpunt van Nick van der Velden. Hij wist een strafschop te benutten. In de laatste minuut van de wedstrijd bepaalde Michael de Leeuw de eindstand op 3-0.
Vandaag (donderdag 18 december) wordt het duidelijk welke tegenstander FC Groningen in de volgende ronde gaat treffen. Aanstaande zaterdag, 20 december, wordt de laatste competitiewedstrijd van het seizoen gespeeld. FC Groningen speelt dan een uitwedstrijd tegen FC Dordrecht. Er wordt afgetrapt om 19.45 uur.
