Vandaag, zondag 15 oktober, speelt FC Groningen in het eigen Noordlease Stadion thuis tegen AZ. De ploeg van trainer Ernest Faber trapt af om 14.30 uur. Tickets zijn eenvoudig online te koop via deze website en vanaf 13.00 uur bij de kassa’s.
Björn Kuipers is scheidsrechter bij het duel tussen de nummers 11 en 8 van de ranglijst. Voor de beste arbiter van Nederland is het alweer een tijd geleden dat hij een wedstrijd van FC Groningen floot. Op 17 januari 2016 was hij de leidsman bij FC Groningen – FC Utrecht (1-4).
Voor Kuipers is het de tweede keer dat hij het affiche FC Groningen – AZ fluit. Op 18 mei 2014 was hij getuige van de 3-0 overwinning van FC Groningen, waarmee de ploeg Europees voetbal binnenhaalde in de play-offs.

Alle aanvoerders van de clubs uit de Eredivisie, Jupiler League en Eredivisie Vrouwen dragen het komend competitieweekend een aanvoerdersband in regenboogkleuren. Daarmee ondersteunen zij initiatieven in het kader van de jaarlijkse Nationale Coming Out Dag die afgelopen woensdag plaatsvond.
Op de Nationale Coming Out Dag wordt aandacht besteed aan het moment dat een homo, lesbienne, biseksueel of transgender (LHBT) openlijk voor zijn of haar seksuele voorkeur uitkomt. Met het dragen van de regenboogband laten topvoetballers zien dat zij iedereen binnen het voetbal – collega-voetballers, scheidsrechters, supporters, vrijwilligers en vele anderen – steunen die worstelen met hun identiteit.
