Maikel Kieftenbeld ontbreekt vanmiddag bij de wedstrijdselectie voor het oefenduel met Roda JC. De aanvoerder heeft van FC Groningen toestemming gekregen om te onderhandelen met Birmingham City FC. De Engelse club, uitkomend in The Sky Bet Championship, betaalt de gelimiteerde transfersom, die vorig jaar was overeengekomen bij de contractverlenging van Kieftenbeld.
Kieftenbeld speelde de afgelopen vijf seizoenen 171 officiële wedstrijden voor de Trots van het Noorden. De 25-jarige aanvoerder maakte daarin vier doelpunten. Vorig jaar verlengde de captain zijn aflopende verbintenis in Groningen met twee jaar. Daarin was een clausule opgenomen met een gelimiteerde transfersom. Bepaling FC Groningen had met deze bepaling ingestemd omdat het één van de uitkomsten was van de contractonderhandelingen. De gelimiteerde transfersom was destijds één van de voorwaarden van Kieftenbeld om voor twee seizoenen te verlengen in Euroborg.
Birmingham City FC is nu bereid gebleken deze transfersom op tafel te leggen. Kieftenbeld reist af naar Engeland om ook persoonlijk tot een akkoord te komen met de Engelse club. Versterking Gezien de recente transferontwikkelingen zal FC Groningen zich nog nadrukkelijker op de transfermarkt oriënteren om de selectie te versterken. Indien Kieftenbeld persoonlijk tot een akkoord komt met Birmingham City FC, bestaat de eerste selectie van trainer Erwin van de Looi nog uit 21 spelers.
