Komende zondag, 1 augustus, zal FC-vedette Fandi Ahmad zijn opwachting maken op de Open Dag van FC Groningen. De 48-jarige Singaporese aanvaller speelt vanaf 15.15 uur met Oud FC Groningen in Euroborg.
Fandi was tussen 1983 en 1985 actief voor FC Groningen. Hij scoorde twaalf keer in de 44 officiële wedstrijden die hij speelde. De ‘Parel van Maleisië’ groeide uit tot één van de meest populaire voetballers die ooit bij de FC speelden. Hij scoorde bovendien in de thuiswedstrijd die FC Groningen in 1983 speelde in de UEFA Cup tegen Inter Milaan.
In zijn geboorteland Singapore groeide hij uit tot een ware volksheld. Na zijn actieve carrière bij enkele Maleisische clubs, OFI Kreta in Griekenland en in eigen land werd Fandi bondscoach. De afgelopen drie seizoenen was hij coach van het Indonesische Pelita Jaya. Rond de millenniumwisseling werd hij gekozen in het FC Groningen-elftal van de twintigste eeuw.
Door bemiddeling van oud-FC’er Henk de Haan keert Fandi terug in Groningen. Begin deze week legde De Haan telefonisch contact met Azië met het verzoek op de Open Dag te komen. Niet veel later kwam de bevestiging dat Fandi zaterdagavond op Schiphol zal landen met twee van zijn vijf kinderen. Deze zoons van 11 en 12 jaar hebben de ambitie ook ooit in Europa te voetballen.
Om 15.15 uur staat in Euroborg de aftrap gepland tussen Oud FC Groningen en een team met vertegenwoordigers uit diverse geledingen van FC-supporters. Enkele jaren geleden in het Stadion Oosterpark trok een andere oud-FC-vedette, Milko Djurovski, destijds veel bekijks op de Open Dag. Ook topscorer aller tijden Peter Houtman was diverse malen actief voor Oud FC Groningen. Fandi maakt zondag zijn debuut in een team met naast Henk de Haan onder anderen Joop Gall, Claus Boekweg, Walter Waalderbos, Henk Oosterwold en Theo ten Caat.
