Trainer Ernest Faber zag zijn ploeg zondagmiddag op Het Kasteel terugkomen van een 2-0 achterstand en met tien man een punt over de streep trekken. De FC-coach vond het begin van de wedstrijd cruciaal: “De start deed teveel energie kosten om het nog te herstellen.”
Faber na afloop voor de camera’s van FOX Sports: “In de eerste helft geef je twee doelpunten weg en dat is zonde. Dat we zo slap begonnen, ligt volgens mij vooral in het balbezit. Sommige spelers zijn er toch nog te angstig in, en dat moet er nu toch wel uit. Je moet vanaf het begin die bal willen hebben.”

Na zeven minuten in de tweede helft kwam FC Groningen met een man minder te staan na de rode kaart voor Juninho Bacuna. “Daarna begonnen we ineens te voetballen,” blikt Faber terug. “De ploeg moet nu wel gaan spelen naar de kwaliteiten, want het gaat nu om de prijzen. Je kunt niet blijven ‘aaien’. We moeten kwaliteit leveren, zowel aanvallend als verdedigend en ambitie tonen.”
Over de rode kaart voor Bacuna: “Juninho speelt tegen zijn grenzen en soms eroverheen. Het blijft goede voetballer met mooie toekomst. We moeten we hem hierin verder begeleiden: beschermen en ondersteunen. Daar zijn wij mee bezig en hijzelf ook. Hij heeft de juiste agressie om ver te komen, maar moet nu vooral leren om zijn voordeel ermee te doen.”
