Mike te Wierik groeit in drie jaar FC Groningen uit tot één van de sterkhouders van het elftal. De solide verdediger kwam op de radar van diverse buitenlandse clubs en kiest Te Wierik voor een droomtransfer naar het Engelse Derby County. In Engeland wordt Te Wierik ploeggenoot van stervoetballer Wayne Rooney. Onverwacht snel keert de stopper echter terug in Groningen. In de ESPN-DOC ‘van Rooney naar Robben’ vertelt Te Wierik zijn verhaal over een bijzonder voetbaljaar.
In de zomer van 2020 verruilt Mike te Wierik FC Groningen voor het Engelse Derby County. Hiermee wordt een droom van de 28-jarige verdediger om in Engeland te voetballen werkelijkheid. Zijn eerste buitenlandse avontuur, een grote stap voor familieman Te Wierik. In Derby maakt de verdediger kennis met de harde wetten van het voetbal en de coronapandemie werkt daarbij niet zijn voordeel.
In de ESPN-DOC ‘Van Rooney naar Robben’ komen naast hoofdpersoon Te Wierik onder anderen zaakwaarnemer René Eijkelkamp en trainer Philip Cocu aan het woord over de verdediger en de stap die Te Wierik midden in de coronaperiode zet.
De ESPN-DOC ‘Van Rooney naar Robben’ gaat vanavond (zondag 2 mei) om 21.00 uur in première op ESPN. De documentaire wordt de komende periode veelvuldig herhaald op één van de zenders van ESPN.
