De Eredivisie ondersteunt komend weekend de Europese campagne ‘Match Day Against Hunger’. In het weekend van 22 tot en met 24 oktober staat een groot aantal Europese voetbalcompetities in het teken van het project ‘1billionhungry’, een mondiaal initiatief van FAO, de voedsel en landbouworganisatie van de Verenigde Naties.
De actie wordt gelijktijdig ondersteund door 16 Europese voetbalcompetities, met naast de Eredivisie onder meer ook de Bundesliga (Duitsland), Serie A (Italië), Primera Division (Spanje), Ligue 1 (Frankrijk) en de Premier League (Engeland). Het Europese evenement omvat 16 Europese voetbalcompetities, meer dan 250 clubs, 125 stadions en miljoenen voetbalfans.
Door aandacht te vragen voor de wereldwijde online petitie op www.1billionhungry.org wordt geprobeerd zoveel mogelijk handtekeningen te verzamelen, die op 29 november worden overhandigd aan de ministeries van Landbouw / Buitenlandse Zaken van de lidstaten van de Verenigde Naties. De petitie is medio mei van dit jaar gelanceerd en heeft inmiddels al 1 miljoen handtekeningen gerealiseerd.
