Vrijdagmiddag rond 15.15 uur vertrokken bijna alle medewerkers van FC Groningen samen met directieleden met de Fantour naar Rotterdam. Ook geblesseerde spelers Kieftenbeld en Ivens gingen mee in de bus. Dit uit protest tegen de verplichte bus-combi.
Dit betekende dat de normale supporters niet mee gingen naar Rotterdam. In 2002 was het voor het laatst dat FC Groningen een officiële wedstrijd speelde zonder fans.
Ondanks dat het personeel protesteerde, stond de wedstrijd ook geheel in het teken van de 3 punten. Deze punten had Groningen namelijk hard nodig. Gelukkig kwam de FC na 18 minuten al op een voorsprong van 0-1 dankzij Lorenzo Burnet. In de tweede helft had Bacuna nog een geweldig schot van ver af, maar helaas kwam deze keihard op de paal. Groningen bleef de hele tijd de meeste dreiging houden, maar helaas kwam er geen tweede doelpunt. Tot in de laatste seconde van de vier extra minuten bleef de wedstrijd nog erg spannend. Maar gelukkig lukte het Excelsior niet om de bal in het doel te schieten en won FC Groningen met 0-1!
Door deze overwinning gaat FC Groningen met een goed gevoel trainen voor de Noordelijke derby van aanstaande zaterdag, FC Groningen – Heerenveen.
