Sepp De Roover zal in de eerste week van januari worden geopereerd aan zijn linkerknie. De Belgische verdediger scheurde op zondag 29 november in de thuiswedstrijd tegen NEC de voorste kruisband af.
Bij een actie een sliding te ontwijken kwam De Roover met zijn volle gewicht op zijn linkerbeen terecht. Omdat hij uit balans was kon zijn knie die belasting niet aan.
Winterswijk De Roover is momenteel in training om de spieren in zijn linkerbeen weer op kracht te krijgen voor de operatie. De exacte datum hiervoor krijgt de 25-jarige Belg pas later deze maand te horen. De operatie zal worden uitgevoerd in Winterswijk door dr. Van Thiel. Deze arts voerde eenzelfde medische ingreep uit toen De Roover op 19-jarige leeftijd bij PSV de kruisband in zijn rechterknie afscheurde. Toen stond de Belgische verdediger binnen vijf maanden al weer op het veld. Dat is nu niet het uitgangspunt.
“Het heeft geen enkele zin overhaast te werk te gaan en risico’s te nemen”, vertelt De Roover. “Dit seizoen kan ik toch niet meer in actie komen, dus ik richt me in alle rust op de voorbereiding op het nieuwe seizoen. Als alles goed verloopt, kan ik dan gewoon vanaf het begin fit aansluiten bij de groep.”
Steunbetuigingen De Roover is sinds zijn blessure overstelpt met steunbetuigingen en dat heeft hem goed gedaan, zo laat hij weten. “Ik heb van NEC en de Supportersvereniging van FC Groningen bloemen ontvangen. Daarnaast heb ik talloze kaarten en andere opbeurende reacties gekregen. Ik ben de mensen hiervoor enorm dankbaar. Het is een geweldige steun in de rug. Hartelijk dank, allemaal.”
