Michael de Leeuw heeft overeenstemming bereikt over een 2,5 jarig contract met het Amerikaanse Chicago Fire, uitkomend in de Major League Soccer. De 29-jarige clubtopscorer van FC Groningen had eerder dit seizoen al een aanbieding van de Trots van het Noorden naast zich neergelegd om zijn aflopende contract in Euroborg te verlengen en aangegeven te willen kiezen voor een mooi buitenlands avontuur.
De Leeuw reist Johan Kappelhof achterna, die tijdens het afgelopen winter-transferwindow al de overstap naar de Verenigde Staten maakte. De komst van de doelpuntenmaker is zeer gewenst in Chicago. De ploeg staat na negen gespeelde wedstrijden in de MLS met 7 punten onderaan in de Eastern Conference. Stand Chicago Fire heeft met één duel minder gespeeld drie punten achterstand op de nummer voorlaatst Columbus Crew. Nummer 8 op de ranglijst is New York Red Bulls – dat eveneens 10 punten heeft, maar dan uit elf gespeelde duels – en die ploeg is donderdag de eerstvolgende tegenstander van Chicago Fire, dat pas acht keer scoorde. Bij de afsluitende oefenwedstrijd van FC Groningen, morgenavond (woensdag 18 mei) tegen THOS, komt De Leeuw niet meer in actie. Hij zal wel in Beerta aanwezig zijn. De Leeuw maakte zijn laatste doelpunt voor FC Groningen op 16 april in de Rotterdamse Kuip tegen Feyenoord (1-1).
