Danny Buijs wordt met ingang van het seizoen 2018/2019 de nieuwe hoofdtrainer van FC Groningen. De 35-jarige voormalig speler van de club tekent een tweejarig contract bij de Trots van het Noorden. De 67-jarige Hennie Spijkerman wordt in ieder geval voor één seizoen de rechterhand van Buijs in het Noordlease Stadion.
Danny Buijs was in het recente verleden twee seizoenen speler van FC Groningen. Tussen 2004 en 2006 kwam hij tot 77 officiële wedstrijden voor groen-wit. Daarin scoorde de rechtermiddenvelder 10 keer, waaronder de zeer gedenkwaardige 2-0 bij de officiële ingebruikname van het nieuwe stadion van FC Groningen op 13 januari 2006 tegen sc Heerenveen. Buijs ontpopte zich onder toenmalig trainer Ron Jans met zijn manier van spelen in twee seizoenen tot één van de publiekslievelingen in het Noorden. De uit Alblasserdam afkomstige Buijs verdiende als speler in Groningen een transfer naar Feyenoord.
Trainerscarrière
Na zijn actieve loopbaan, met bijna 300 officiële wedstrijden in het betaalde voetbal, begon Buijs in 2014 zijn trainerscarrière bij Kozakken Boys. Momenteel staat hij met de ploeg uit Werkendam op de tweede plaats in de Tweede Divisie.
Hennie Spijkerman uit Zwolle werkte de afgelopen jaren bij Ajax. Hij was staflid van de eerste selectie van de Amsterdammers onder de hoofdtrainers Frank de Boer, Peter Bosz en Marcel Keizer. Daarvoor was Spijkerman onder meer twee jaar hoofdtrainer van FC Emmen en drie seizoenen van FC Zwolle.
FC Groningen kijkt naar een later moment voor de presentatie van het nieuwe trainersduo voor het seizoen 2018/2019. Dan ook zullen betrokkenen een inhoudelijke toelichting geven op de aanstelling van Danny Buijs en Hennie Spijkerman. De club wil op dit moment alle aandacht en energie steken in het hier en nu en Danny Buijs richt zich op zijn huidige club Kozakken Boys en de cursus UEFA Pro Coach Betaald Voetbal in Zeist, die hij momenteel volgt.
Huidig assistent-trainer Peter Hoekstra en keeperstrainer Bas Roorda blijven ook volgend seizoen deel uitmaken van de technische staf van de eerste selectie.
