FC Groningen verloor afgelopen zondag buitenshuis met 3-0 van ADO Den Haag. Verschillende oud-FC’ers deden het ‘Buiten Euroborg’ en stuk beter. Zowel in het buitenland als binnen de landsgrenzen waren enkele ex-spelers van de Trots van het Noorden succesvol. Het was echter niet voor alle spelers met een FC Groningen-verleden een goed weekend.
Bayern München trapte afgelopen vrijdag tegen VfL Wolfsburg het nieuwe Bundesliga-seizoen af. Arjen Robben begon in de basis bij de Duitse kampioen. Met een doelpunt en een assist was de voetballer uit Bedum de grote man bij de Zuid-Duitse topclub. Ook werd dit weekend bekend dat Robben door de supporters van Bayern München is verkozen tot Bayern-speler van het seizoen 2013/2014.
Filip Kostic begon voor zijn nieuwe club VfB Stuttgart tegen Borussia Mönchengladbach op de bank en mocht ruim tien minuten voor tijd invallen. Stuttgart stond op dat moment met 1-0 voor, maar kreeg in de negentigste minuut de gelijkmaker om de oren. Kostic maakte op deze manier direct kennis met de harde wetten van het Duitse voetbal.
Net als in Duitsland begon de competitie afgelopen weekend ook in Griekenland. Jonas Ivens stond in de basis bij zijn nieuwe club Niki Volos in de wedstrijd tegen Olympiakos. De Belg kon niet voorkomen dat zijn ploeg met 3-1 verloor tegen de Griekse kampioen van het afgelopen seizoen.
Marcus Berg kende bij Panathinaikos een zeer ongelukkige start. De Zweed, afgelopen donderdag in de Europa League nog goed voor alle vier de doelpunten in de 4-1 overwinning tegen het Deense Midtjylland, brak in de uitwedstrijd tegen Levadiakos zijn sleutelbeen en is de komende weken uitgeschakeld. Het duel eindigde in een 1-1 gelijkspel.
Niet alleen in het buitenland waren de nodige oud-FC’ers in het nieuws. Binnen de landsgrenzen was er wederom een hoofdrol weggelegd voor Stef Nijland, die als invaller bij PEC Zwolle het winnende doelpunt maakte in de wedstrijd tegen Vitesse, 2-1. De door FC Groningen verhuurde Paco van Moorsel was met een doelpunt belangrijk voor N.E.C. De Nijmegenaren wonnen in de Jupiler League met 5-1 van Fortuna Sittard.
