FC Groningen speelde de eerste thuiswedstrijd van 2017 met 1-1 gelijk tegen Vitesse. In ‘Boetnlaand’ kreeg Virgil van Dijk mooi nieuws van zijn club, maakte William Ekong zijn debuut in België en liet Marcus Berg zien goed in vorm te zijn.
Virgil van Dijk mag zich vanaf dit weekend captain van het Engelse Southampton noemen. De voormalig FC’er nam de aanvoerdersband over van collega-verdediger José Fonte, die eerder deze week bij de club vertrok. Heel veel geluk bracht de band Van Dijk afgelopen weekend nog niet.

Southampton nam het in de Premier League in eigen huis op tegen kampioen Leicester City en hoewel de ploeg van Van Dijk met 3-0 won, moest de verdediger zich na bijna een uur spelen vanwege een voetblessure laten vervangen. Dusan Tadic was één van de doelpuntenmakers bij Southampton. De voormalig FC’er schoot in de slotfase een strafschop binnen. Het was voor Tadic de eerste treffer in het eigen St. Mary’s Stadium in meer dan een jaar tijd.
Debuut
William Ekong tekende in de zomer van 2015 een contract bij het Belgische AA Gent en maakte afgelopen weekend eindelijk zijn competitiedebuut voor de Buffalo's. De verdediger werd anderhalf jaar verhuurd aan het Noorse Haugesund en sloot in het nieuwe kalenderjaar aan bij de Belgen. De Nigeriaans international stond bij de hervatting van de competitie thuis tegen Charleroi in het hart van de verdediging en speelde de volledige wedstrijd. Gent won het treffen met 1-0.
In vorm
Marcus Berg steekt in een uitstekende vorm. De Zweedse spits van het Griekse Panathinaikos maakte afgelopen donderdag beide goals in de met 2-1 gewonnen thuiswedstrijd tegen Platanias. Afgelopen zondag was Berg trefzeker op bezoek bij Kerkyra. Dat duel eindigde in 1-1.
Berg maakte dit seizoen acht treffers in 16 optredens. In iedere competitiewedstrijd waarin Berg dit seizoen scoorde, maakte hij het eerste doelpunt van het duel. Panathinaikos heeft 30 punten verzameld uit 17 duels en staat op een vierde plaats in de Griekse Super League.
