Verdediger Thijmen Blokzijl en doelman Jasper Meijster zijn geselecteerd voor het Europees Kampioenschap onder-17. Het eindtoernooi wordt in mei gespeeld in Israël. De spelers uit de Opleiding van FC Groningen zaten ook al in de kwalificatiefase bij de selectie van de Groningse bondscoach Mischa Visser. Oranje onder-17 speelt in de groepsfase tegen Bulgarije, Polen en Frankrijk.
Thijmen Blokzijl is dit seizoen uitgegroeid tot een vaste waarde in de verdediging bij zowel FC Groningen onder-18 als bij Nederland onder-17. De 17-jarige centrale verdediger speelde dit seizoen al geregeld mee bij FC Groningen onder-21 en mocht zelfs al enkele keren aansluiten bij de wedstrijdselectie van het eerste elftal. Blokzijl tekende ijn 2021 zijn eerste contract bij FC Groningen, tot medio 2024.
Jasper Meijster is de eerste doelman van FC Groningen onder-18. De 17-jarige keeper heeft tot nu toe één interland gespeeld voor Nederland onder-17, in een oefenduel tegen Tsjechië. Meijster heeft al wel meerdere keren bij de selectie van het nationale jeugdteam gezeten.
Route Nederland onder-17 kwalificeerde zich voor dit EK door eerste te worden in een poule met Hongarije, Griekenland en Slowakije. Thijmen Blokzijl speelde in alle drie groepswedstrijden 90 minuten voor het team en hield daarin twee keer ‘de nul’. Jasper Meijster zat als derde doelman de gehele groepsfase op de tribune.
Nederland speelt eerst in Lod tegen Bulgarije op maandag 16 mei, om 20.00 uur. Daarna volgt een ontmoeting met Polen, op donderdag 19 mei om 17.30 uur in Lod. Het laatste groepsduel met Frankrijk staat gepland voor zondag 22 mei om 17.30 uur in Rishon Lezion. Nederland onder-17 komt op woensdag 11 mei bij elkaar op de KNVB Campus in Zeist, om een dag later naar Israël te vliegen.
