Jong FC Groningen heeft maandagavond in Arnhem met 1-0 gewonnen van Jong Vitesse/AGOVV en is daarmee als vierde geëindigd in de Beloften Eredivisie. De beste prestatie van FC Groningen sinds de invoering van deze leeftijdsklasse.
De ploeg van trainer Erwin van de Looi speelde niet een van zijn betere wedstrijden, maar werd door met name doelman Leonard Nienhuis op de been gehouden in het 26ste en laatste competitieduel van het seizoen. Serhat Koç en Dennis Krohne hadden in de tweede helft kansen gekregen, voordat spits Pepijn Kluin drie minuten voor tijd de enige en winnende treffer van de avond scoorde: 0-1.
Door de zege passeerde Groningen de tegenstander van vanavond en was de vierde plek een feit. Nooit eerder eindigden de Beloften zo hoog in de Eredivisie. De titelrace ging op de allerlaatste speeldag toch niet naar Jong Ajax van trainer Pieter Huistra. De Amsterdammers lieten twee punten liggen tegen Jong FC Twente en zagen Jong PSV alsnog langszij komen. Volgend jaar is Erwin van de Looi de assistent van Pieter Huistra bij het eerste elftal van FC Groningen.
