FC Groningen speelt in de derde ronde van het KNVB-bekertoernooi 2015/2016 een uitwedstrijd tegen FC Utrecht. Het duel wordt woensdag 28 oktober gespeeld en begint om 20.45 uur. Woensdag won Groningen thuis met 2-1 van Twente. Dinsdag won FC Utrecht met 2-0 bij ONS Boso Sneek.
In Rotterdam werd donderdagavond laat de loting verricht voor de volgende bekerronde, waarin nog 32 clubs actief zijn. De vier Europese deelnemers kunnen elkaar in deze ronde nog niet treffen. Naast dit kwartet waren er acht potentiële tegenstanders uit de Eredivisie, negen uit de Jupiler League en elf amateurverenigingen (waaronder acht Topklassers) de mogelijke tegenstanders.
Tegenstander: FC Utrecht De wedstrijd tussen FC Utrecht en FC Groningen wordt voor de vierde keer gespeeld in het KNVB-bekertoernooi. Opmerkelijk genoeg betrof het ook in de eerdere drie gevallen een wedstrijd in de Domstad. FC Groningen won in 1977 met 1-0 door een treffer van Peter Eimers. In 2009 werd met 4-2 gezegevierd door Groningen en kwamen de treffers van Nicklas Pedersen en Tim Matavz, die elk tweemaal scoorden. Goals van Matavz en Andreas Granqvist waren in de kwartfinales in 2011 niet voldoende (3-2 voor Utrecht). De bekerzege van 2009 was ook de meest recente zege in Utrecht. De afgelopen acht wedstrijden won de thuisclub, zoals onlangs eind augustus nog met 2-0. Woensdagavond De duels in de derde ronde worden op dinsdag 27, woensdag 28 en donderdag 29 oktober gespeeld. De dinsdag valt voor FC Groningen af in verband met de rustdagen tussen het duel in de Europa League (Liberec-uit) van 22 oktober en de Eredivisiewedstrijd (NEC-uit) van zondag 25 oktober. De donderdag valt af vanwege de thuiswedstrijd tegen PEC Zwolle in Euroborg op zaterdag 31 oktober.
Vrijdamiddag werd door de KNVB het aanvangstijdstip van de zestien wedstrijden gepubliceerd. Utrecht-Groningen begint om 20.45 uur. De zestien winnaars plaatsen zich voor de achtste finales die op dinsdag 15, woensdag 16 en donderdag 17 december 2015 gepland staan.
