Arjen Robben zet een punt achter zijn actieve voetbalcarrière. De 37-jarige clublegende verraste vorig jaar zomer met de aankondiging van een comeback bij zijn ‘jeugdliefde’ FC Groningen. Het enthousiasme over zijn terugkeer bij de club, waar het voor Robben als jochie allemaal begon, was niet alleen in Stad en Ommeland ongekend. Groningen was een weekend lang wereldnieuws en gedurende het gehele seizoen 2020/2021 was de aanvoerder doorlopend onderwerp van gesprek. De 96-voudig Oranje-international kwam in totaal in zeven officiële wedstrijden van FC Groningen in actie.
In totaal voetbalde Arjen Robben 59 officiële duels voor FC Groningen. De latere steraanvaller debuteerde op 16-jarige leeftijd op 3 december 2000 in de uitwedstrijd tegen RKC Waalwijk. Het laatste officiële duel dat Robben in het groen-wit speelde, was het play-offduel met FC Utrecht, op 19 mei van dit jaar.
Hoewel de hoop en wens van alles en iedereen rondom FC Groningen was dat Robben nog een seizoen zou doorgaan, heeft hij na lang wikken en wegen besloten om te stoppen. “Een jaar geleden kondigde ik mijn comeback aan als speler van FC Groningen. Ik ben dit avontuur met veel energie en enthousiasme aangegaan. Terugkijkend op het afgelopen seizoen moet ik toch tot de eerlijke conclusie komen dat het aantal wedstrijdminuten is tegengevallen. Na de laatste wedstrijd heb ik gezegd dat ik de tijd zou nemen om een weloverwogen beslissing te nemen over de toekomst. Dat was heel moeilijk, omdat het verstand en de emotie recht tegenover elkaar stonden. Het voetbalhart wilde graag verder, vooral met dat uiteindelijke doel van een volle Euroborg in het vooruitzicht. Maar de beslissing om te stoppen is eerlijk en realistisch. Daarom ben ik vanaf vandaag geen speler meer, maar supporter van onze FC. Ik wil alle voetbalsupporters en liefhebbers hartelijk bedanken voor alle warme steun en lieve berichten die ik het afgelopen jaar heb mogen ontvangen. Dat was geweldig en hartverwarmend. Ik wens alles en iedereen een mooi voetbalseizoen toe in volle stadions, maar bovenal een goede gezondheid.”
