FC Groningen presenteerde maandagmiddag onder toeziend oog van regionale, landelijke én Mexicaanse pers de nieuwe aanwinst Uriel Antuna. De vleugelaanvaller, die vandaag zijn twintigste verjaardag viert, wordt voor twee seizoenen gehuurd van Manchester City. Antuna gaat in Groningen spelen met rugnummer 14.
De stap naar Groningen is het eerste buitenlandse avontuur voor de aanvaller nadat hij is eigen land zowel in de jeugd als in het eerste team speelde voor Santos Laguna. Net als de FC speelt Santos Laguna is het groen-wit, maar de clubkleuren zijn uiteraard niet de reden waarom de Mexicaan koos voor FC Groningen.
Mooie stap
“FC Groningen is een club met een goede structuur,” zegt Antuna. “Het is voor mij een mooie stap. Ik heb me verdiept in de club, al ken ik mijn teamgenoten natuurlijk nog niet. Ik verheug me erop ze snel te leren kennen. Ik weet wel dat grote spelers als Arjen Robben en Luis Suárez hier hebben gespeeld. Het is een club met een goed idee over voetballen. De Eredivisie is een competitie, die ik van huis uit al met veel interesse heb gevolgd.”
De ouders van de nieuwste aanwinst zaten vol trots in de zaal te kijken naar de presentatie van hun oudste zoon en vergezellen hem de eerste tijd in Groningen. Moeder Bertha Alicia blijft zelfs negentig dagen in Nederland, vader Carlos Alberto gaat eerder terug naar Mexico. Antuna, de oudste van drie voetballende broers, begon al op jonge leeftijd met voetballen. “Zoals iedereen in Mexico ben ik op straat begonnen bij ons in de wijk. De laatste vijf jaar heb ik bij Santos Laguna gespeeld.”
Echte buitenspeler
Antuna, wiens absolute idool de Braziliaan Neymar is, beschrijft zichzelf als snelle aanvaller die graag de combinatie zoekt met zijn medespelers. “Ik ben een echte buitenspeler, ben erg snel en hoop hier veel te leren. Ik wil graag minuten maken in het eerste, ervaring opdoen en hopelijk betrokken zijn bij veel goals. Met assists of door zelf te scoren. Ik hoop met mijn acties een goede bijdrage te kunnen leveren aan het team.”
