Oluwafemi Ajilore en Tim Sparv hebben beiden een gehele wedstrijd gespeeld in respectievelijk de nationale teams van Nigeria en Finland. Beide middenvelders wonnen ook met hun land.
Nigeria mag door de 1-0 overwinning op Mozambique, die overigens in de laatste speelminuut tot stand kwam, hoop houden op een plek op het WK in Zuid-Afrika. Koploper Tunesië won nipt van Kenia (1-0) en behoudt een voorsprong van twee punten met nog één speelronde te gaan.
Als Nigeria op 14 november in Kenia wint en Tunesië zich verslikt in Mozambique, gaat Nigeria alsnog naar het WK. De ‘Super Eagles’ hebben zich overigens al wel geplaatst voor het toernooi om de African Nations Cup dat van 10 tot 31 januari 2010 in Angola wordt gespeeld. De loting is op 30 november.
Finland was – in de groep met onder meer Duitsland en Rusland – reeds uitgeschakeld voor het WK en won zaterdag in Helsinki met 2-1 van Wales. Tim Sparv, die deel uitmaakt van de jongere generatie van het nationale team, speelde de volle negentig minuten. Komende woensdag speelt Finland in Hamburg tegen Duitsland.
