Dinsdagmiddag heeft Theo Huizinga in Euroborg zijn afscheidsreceptie gehad bij FC Groningen. De teammanager verlaat de club na 36 jaar in diverse functies. Vele voetbalbekendheden waren naar Groningen afgereisd voor deze gelegenheid.
Enkele sprekers waaronder directeur Hans Nijland en captain Petter Andersson bedankten Theo Huizinga voor de jarenlange samenwerking. Daarna vond er een forum plaats onder leiding van journalist Henk Kok met panelleden Brian van Loo, Ronald Koeman, Henk Hagenauw en Ron Jans. Zij haalden herinneringen op en uiteraard kwamen ook de nodige anekdotes voorbij in deze setting.
Huizinga nam ten slotte ruim de tijd om iedereen te bedanken voor de 36 jaar die hij in Groningen actief was in de functies van spelershome-beheerder, elftalleider, manager algemene zaken en teammanager. Hans Nijland en voormalige technisch manager Martin Koeman kwamen daarbij aan bod, maar ook een kwartet medewerkers dat samen ruim honderd jaar bij de club actief is en was: Menco Huizinga, Anton Lubben, Jan Vijfschaft en Henk Sikkema.
Veile bekendheden uit de Nederlandse voetballerij maakten tenslotte van de gelegenheid gebruik een hapje en een drankje te nuttigen in de lounge van Euroborg, die vanaf aanstaande maandag wegens een verbouwing volledig op de schop zal gaan. Huizinga zal met het team de donderdag tot en met zaterdag in Scheveningen verblijven en dan na een periode van 36 jaar afzwaaien bij de club, die hij de komende jaren als supporter zal volgen. Van 1954 tot en met 1976 kreeg Huizinga (66) de band met ‘zijn’ club GVAV ook als seizoenkaarthouder.
