Daniël van Kaam is liefhebber en topsporter in hart en nieren. Al van jongs af aan slaapt hij met een bal onder zijn kussen en doet de middenvelder er alles aan om zijn droom waar te maken: slagen in het profvoetbal. Ondanks zijn liefde voor de sport gaat het voetballeven van de linkspoot echter niet altijd over rozen
Daniël van Kaam doorliep de FC Groningen Opleiding en maakte zijn debuut in Euroborg op 6 oktober 2018. De middenvelder zit inmiddels al vier seizoenen bij de FC, waarin hij tot zeventig officiële optredens kwam.
Van Kaam staat bekend als een vrolijke jongen en absolute liefhebber van de sport. Hij is zich er terdege van bewust dat zijn leven er anders uitziet dan dat van zijn vrienden en leeftijdsgenoten, maar weigert dit te zien als offers: het hoort bij het leven van een topsporter.
Toch zijn er ook moeilijke momenten in het voetballeven van het nog steeds pas 22-jarige talent. Op vakantie in Brazilië raakte hij zwaar geblesseerd aan zijn knie en scheenbeen. Hierdoor was Van Kaam maar liefst zeven maanden uit de roulatie en beleefde één van de zwaarste periodes uit zijn carrière. Maar uiteindelijk knokte hij zich terug.
Ook dit seizoen ervaart de speler uit de eigen Opleiding als een dieptepunt. In 2020-2021 was Van Kaam nog onomstreden als basisspeler van de FC. Nu moet hij het voornamelijk doen met invalbeurten. Zijn ‘hoogtepunt van de week’, de wedstrijddag, is naar eigen zeggen geen hoogtepunt meer. Toch blijft Daniël vechten voor zijn plek, want hij wil meer: veel spelen en belangrijk zijn.

De Aanpakkers Onder de vlag van Meer en Beter Bewegen wil FC Groningen zoveel mogelijk mensen in het achterland in beweging brengen. In samenwerking met onder andere Donar, Lycurgus, Topsport Noord en de gemeente en provincie Groningen is de Trots van het Noorden afgelopen januari begonnen met de Aanpakkers. Dit is één van de projecten waarbij de kracht van topsport wordt ingezet om maatschappelijke doelen te bereiken.
