FC Groningen heeft afgelopen zondagmiddag in Utrecht niet de drie punten meet terug kunnen nemen terug naar Groningen. Invaller Ruud Boymans scoorde in de 61e minuut het doelpunt waarmee FC Utrecht de winst pakte.
In de eerste helft voerde FC Utrecht veel druk uit op de ploeg van Erwin van de Looi. Dit resulteerde in een aantal kansen voor de thuisploeg die gelukkig allemaal niet in het net belanden.
In de tweede helft kon Utrecht het druk houden niet meer volhouden, waardoor FC Groningen meer het spel kon maken. Net na rust kreeg FC Groningen speler Danny Hoesen de grootste kans tot dan toe voor FC Groningen, hij wist helaas niet te scoren. Na ruim een uur spelen scoorde Ruud Boymans voor FC Utrecht uit een snelle tegenstoot. Een paar minuten later kreeg FC Groningen een penalty door een overtreding van Kum op Antonia. Tjaronn Chery kon doelman Robbin Ruiter ook niet passeren. Groningen werd langzaamaan aanvallender, maar kreeg geen grote kansen meer waardoor er ook geen verandering meer kwam in de stand.
Voorafgaand aan de wedstrijd liepen er 11 Junior Club leden met een speler het veld op: Eva Kruize, Laura Kruize, Noa Huisman, Peter Loef, Dani Pinheiro Bartolo, Bellamy Blanken, Jochem de Boer, Jesse de Boer, Anouk Wiering, Melvin Wiering en Björn Buisman.
Komende zondag speelt FC Groningen de volgende competitiewedstrijd, thuis tegen Willem II om 14.30 uur. Maar eerder nog deze week, op woensdag 24 september, speelt FC Groningen nog een bekerwedstrijd in en tegen Barendrecht. Dat duel begint om 20.00 uur.
