Het heeft even geduurd, maar vrijdagavond (26 januari) staat dan toch echt de eerste officiële wedstrijd van FC Groningen in 2024 voor eigen publiek op de rol. Vanaf 20.00 uur is Jong AZ de tegenstander in speelronde 23 van de Keuken Kampioen Divisie. Het duel in Euroborg staat in het teken van ‘In memoriam’, een traditie waarbij de Trots van het Noorden de in het afgelopen kalenderjaar overleden supporters van de club herdenkt.
Hoofdtrainer Dick Lukkien zegt dat zijn staf en de spelersgroep zich erop verheugen om na een relatief lange periode eindelijk weer eens het eigen groene gras in Euroborg te mogen betreden. “We zijn met goede resultaten begonnen in uitwedstrijden, waar we de steun van de volle uitvakken hebben gevoeld, en kijken er nu naar uit om in Euroborg te mogen spelen voor de eigen trouwe aanhang. Zeker met de wetenschap dat het een ‘In memoriam-wedstrijd’ is, maakt dat het nog specialer. Het geeft altijd een bijzondere sfeer, vind ik.”
Wedstrijdselectie De wedstrijdselectie van morgenavond kent in vergelijking met de competitiewedstrijd van afgelopen maandag tegen Jong Ajax een aantal mutaties. Aanvoerder Leandro Bacuna keert waarschijnlijk terug na ziek zijn, maar haakte op de afsluitende training vroegtijdig af. Nieuweling Rui Mendes staat vrijdag voor het eerst namens FC Groningen op het wedstrijdformulier. Jorg Schreuders viel in Amsterdam uit met een lichte blessure. De jonge aanvallende middenvelder is net als Bacuna nog een twijfelgeval.
