Rob McDonald staat voor altijd in de geschiedenisboeken van FC Groningen. De Engelse spits maakte het eerste Europese doelpunt ooit voor de club. In Estadio Vicente Calderón schoot McDonald de Trots van het Noorden in 1983 op voorsprong tegen Atletico Madrid. In de special ‘Het magische moment van Rob McDonald’ kijkt de spits terug op de heroïsche duels met de Spaanse topclub. De special werd eerder uitgezonden op ESPN en is vanaf nu terug te zien op het YouTube-kanaal van FC Groningen.
De Engelsman McDonald kwam in het seizoen 1982/1983 naar Groningen. In zijn eerste seizoen maakte de spits veertien goals waarvan elf in de competitie en verzekerde zich met FC Groningen voor het eerst in de clubgeschiedenis van Europees voetbal. Het jaar daarop kwam een droomtegenstander uit de koker toen de Spaanse topclub Atletico Madrid werd geloot.
Op 14 september 1983 schreef McDonald clubgeschiedenis door het eerste Europese doelpunt ooit voor FC Groningen te maken. Een pegel met zijn linker vloog achter de keeper Ángel Mejías. In de special ‘Het magische moment van Rob McDonald’ kijkt de voormalig spits bijna 40 jaar later terug op de tweeluik met de Madrilenen.
Hoewel de uitwedstrijd met 2-1 werd verloren, boog FC Groningen de stand door een 3-0 zege in een uitzinnig Oosterpark helemaal om. Volgens McDonald de meest besproken wedstrijd in de clubgeschiedenis. De Engelsman neemt een kijkje in de wijk waar ooit het stadion stond en gaat bij zijn oude woonhuis langs. ESPN zond de special eerder deze week uit op televisie. De special ‘Het magische moment van Rob McDonald’ is vanaf nu te zien op het YouTube-kanaal van FC Groningen of onderstaande videoplayer.
