Yuri Cornelisse kende een succesvolle periode van twee seizoenen bij FC Groningen. De aanvaller maakte hoogte- en dieptepunten mee in Euroborg. Ervaringen die hij tegenwoordig gebruikt als coach. De mentale uitdagingen die komen kijken bij de topsport tijdens het presteren onder druk. In de special ‘De tranen van Yuri Cornelisse’ zoomt de voormalig FC’er in op een moment van mentale druk en laat hij zien hoe deze momenten te gebruiken als coach voor anderen. De special ‘De tranen van Yuri Cornelisse’ is nu te zien op YouTube.
De voormalig profvoetballer uit Alkmaar heeft na een prachtige loopbaan binnen de lijnen een mooie maatschappelijke carrière opgebouwd. Na zijn voetballeven werkte Cornelisse onder meer bij de politie en tegenwoordig is hij terug in zijn geboortestad. Cornelisse is coach voor onder andere topsporters. Hij begeleidt mensen, actief binnen en buiten de sport, zowel op het fysieke als mentale vlak.
Cornelisse speelde in totaal 70 wedstrijden voor FC Groningen waarin hij 13 treffers maakte. Pareltjes zoals thuis tegen PSV in het Oosterpark, of de belangrijke goal op bezoek bij FC Twente die de FC Europees voetbal opleverde. Een ander historisch moment was de gemiste strafschop in 2004 thuis tegen Partizan Belgrado. Mede door deze misser hield het UEFA Cup-avontuur dat seizoen na het duel met Partizan op. Drie dagen na de uitschakeling, na een heroïsch gewonnen wedstrijd tegen Vitesse, kwamen er tranen bij Cornelisse.
In de special ‘De tranen van Yuri Cornelisse’ kijkt de voormalig FC’er terug op dat moment, zijn periode bij FC Groningen en geeft hij een inkijkje in zijn huidige leven. Een maatschappelijke carrière waarin de lessen geleerd in zijn topsportloopbaan nog altijd van pas komen. De special werd eerder uitgezonden op ESPN en is vanaf nu te zien op YouTube.
