Nick Bakker sluit aan het begin van de voorbereiding aan bij FC Groningen. De verdediger zal gaan meetrainen met de eerste selectie onder leiding van hoofdtrainer Dick Lukkien. Mocht de periode van beide kanten bevallen, wordt er gesproken over een eventueel contract voor Bakker die de Opleiding bij FC Groningen doorliep.
Nick Bakker is geboren in Groningen en doorliep de gehele Opleiding van de Trots van het Noorden. De centrale verdediger debuteerde in februari 2012 voor het eerste elftal in de met 3-0 gewonnen thuiswedstrijd tegen PSV. Mede door blessureleed kwam Bakker niet verder dan 6 wedstrijden in de hoofdmacht.
De verdediger vertrok in 2016 naar FC Emmen waar hij onder leiding van trainer Dick Lukkien vaste basisspeler werd in het team dat promoveerde naar de Eredivisie. Ook in de Eredivisie was Bakker een basisspeler bij FC Emmen. Hij vertrok in het seizoen 2021/2022 naar sc Heerenveen en stond kortstondig onder contract bij Al-Arabi in Saoedi-Arabië. De 29-jarige Bakker speelde meer dan 150 wedstrijden in het betaalde voetbal.
Bakker kijkt uit naar de voorbereiding bij de club die hij van jongs af aan al zo goed kent. “Ik heb – behalve mijn periode in Saoedi Arabië – altijd in Groningen gewoond. Ik voel me hier thuis, Groningen is altijd mijn club en stad geweest,” aldus de verdediger.
“Ik ken trainer Dick Lukkien goed, onder meer vanuit mijn periode bij FC Emmen. Via hem is het contact ontstaan en ik train nu al een tijdje bij de club. Ik zat de laatste maanden zonder club, maar heb hier in het TopsportZorgCentrum onder goede omstandigheden een mooie inhaalslag kunnen maken. We hebben afgesproken dat ik aan het begin van de voorbereiding aansluit bij de groep en wanneer het van beide kanten goed bevalt, is de insteek om te gaan samenwerken.”
