Rui Mendes is sinds vandaag – woensdag 24 januari 2024 – Groninger. De in Duitsland opgegroeide Portugese aanvaller tekende een contract voor meerdere seizoenen in Euroborg en sluit per direct aan bij de selectie van hoofdtrainer Dick Lukkien. Mendes gaat in het groen-wit spelen met rugnummer 27. De aanvaller kijkt uit naar zijn nieuwe avontuur in Nederland en jaagt met de FC op een succesvolle tweede seizoenhelft.
Rui Mendes komt binnen de technische staf van FC Groningen twee voor hem zeer bekende gezichten tegen. Hoofdtrainer Dick Lukkien en assistent Casper Goedkoop werkten de vorige twee seizoenen intensief samen met de aanvaller. “Ik ken de trainers goed, hun spelopvatting en kijk op voetbal en weet wat ze willen. Ik kijk er naar uit om hier te mogen spelen,” vertelt Mendes in de catacomben van Euroborg.
Voor zijn overstap van Drenthe naar Groningen informeerde Mendes bij bekenden naar zijn mogelijke nieuwe werkomgeving. “Ik heb er met Maikel Kieftenbeld, Mike te Wierik en Keziah Veendorp over gesproken. Nick Bakker stuurde me ook een bericht. Ze zeiden allemaal hetzelfde: ‘Als je de kans krijgt, moet je het doen. FC Groningen is een mooie club.’ En nu ik hier ben, zie ik het met eigen ogen. Een mooi, groot stadion en de faciliteiten zijn geweldig. Het is wellicht wat gewaagd om te zeggen, maar deze club hoort niet in de KKD te spelen. Bij FC Groningen denk ik eerder aan Europees voetbal.”
Mendes zegt zich goed te voelen en is klaar voor een nieuwe stap in zijn carrière. “Ik ben heel blij hier te zijn. Het is iets speciaals. De laatste weken is het team zienderogen gegroeid en haalt FC Groningen goede resultaten. Er zit vechtlust in de ploeg, met jonge spelers met veel potentie. Ik hoop te gaan bijdragen aan het doel om FC Groningen terug te brengen naar daar waar de club hoort en de supporters blij te maken met acties en doelpunten. Ik ben een speler die iets kan creëren, ben snel, heb goede loopacties en diepte in mijn spel. Ik denk dat ik hier heel goed kan passen. Ik kan niet wachten en kijk er naar uit om voor FC Groningen te spelen.”
