Henk Veldmate keert na een afwezigheid van zeven jaar terug bij FC Groningen. De 66-jarige voormalig speler en technisch manager van de Trots van het Noorden gaat per 15 juni 2023 de functie van Internationaal Scout bekleden. Hij tekent in Euroborg een contract tot 1 september 2026. Onder leiding van algemeen directeur Wouter Gudde gaat Veldmate zich samen met de hoofdtrainer van FC Groningen, Hoofd Scouting Wes Beuvink en manager Voetbal en Opleiding Art Langeler bezighouden met de aan- en verkoop van spelers en de inrichting van de eerste selectie van de club.
Na ruim 33 dienstjaren in verschillende functies bij de Trots van het Noorden stapte Henk Veldmate begin 2016 over naar Ajax. In de jaren ervoor was hij achtereenvolgens zeven jaar speler, negen jaar trainer/coach én hoofd jeugdopleiding, 16 jaar manager technische zaken en de laatste anderhalf jaar voor zijn vertrek naar Amsterdam hoofd scouting bij FC Groningen. Veldmate was als manager technische zaken in Euroborg mede verantwoordelijk voor het aantrekken van topspelers als Erik Nevland, Luis Suárez, Marcus Berg, Tim Matavz, Dusan Tadic, Virgil van Dijk en Filip Kostic.
Algemeen directeur Wouter Gudde zegt over de terugkeer van Veldmate bij FC Groningen: “Wij zijn enorm blij dat we Henk hebben weten te bewegen tot een terugkeer bij de club. Henk is naast een fijne persoonlijkheid een absolute vakman met heel veel ervaring, heeft een groot nationaal en internationaal netwerk binnen de voetballerij en een zeer goede kijk op voetbal. Met zijn expertise hebben wij de overtuiging dat Henk ons op voetbaltechnisch vlak de komende jaren enorm kan helpen in de verdere ontwikkeling van de club en het realiseren van onze doelstellingen.”
Henk Veldmate vertelt waarom hij na zeven jaar Ajax terugkeert in Euroborg. “Mijn binding met FC Groningen is altijd heel sterk geweest. Een heel groot deel van mijn werkende leven is groen-wit. De club heeft een speciale plek in mijn hart. Ik ben ook tijdens mijn werkzaamheden voor Ajax altijd in Groningen blijven wonen. Nu keer ik ook figuurlijk terug naar huis. Ik heb een geweldige periode gehad in Amsterdam, waarvoor ik de club hartelijk wil bedanken en ik waardeer het ook zeer dat Ajax ondanks mijn doorlopende overeenkomst heeft meegewerkt aan een vervroegd vertrek. Ik ben blij terug te keren bij FC Groningen en kijk er naar uit om de club te helpen de weg omhoog weer in te slaan en bij te dragen aan het realiseren van de sportieve ambities.”
