Het eerste officiële duel van FC Groningen in het kalenderjaar 2024 is een bekerwedstrijd. Morgenavond, dinsdag 16 januari, is Excelsior in Rotterdam de tegenstander in de achtste finales van het TOTO KNVB bekertoernooi. De aftrap in het Van Donge & De Roo Stadion is om 20.00 uur. FC Groningen krijgt in Rotterdam support van een volledig uitverkocht uitvak. Voor supporters die niet kunnen of willen afreizen, is het bekerduel live te volgen via ESPN 3.
Met zo ongeveer om de drie dagen een wedstrijd kijkt hoofdtrainer Dick Lukkien uit naar het overvolle programma in de januari-maand, dat opmerkelijk genoeg voor FC Groningen begint met een bekerwedstrijd. Het geplande competitieduel met Jong Ajax van vanavond (maandag 15 januari) is vanwege het bekerprogramma met een week verplaatst.
Zin Over de afgelopen twee weken zegt Lukkien: “De winterstop was kort en met twee oefenduels hebben we warm kunnen draaien voor de tweede seizoenshelft. Scheidsrechter De Trots van het Noorden wordt in Rotterdam gesteund door een vol uitvak, met 400 FC-supporters.
