FC Groningen heeft zich versterkt met spits Kevin van Veen. De 32-jarige aanvaller komt over van het Schotse Motherwell en tekende in Euroborg een contract tot medio 2026. Van Veen, die in Motherwell nog een doorlopende overeenkomst had, krijgt in Groningen rugnummer 9.
Kevin van Veen liet zich afgelopen seizoen gelden in het Schotse Premiership. Met 25 competitiegoals in 38 wedstrijden werd de ervaren spits tweede op de topscorerslijst in Schotland. Daarnaast schoot Van Veen vier keer raak in de verschillende bekertoernooien in Schotland. De topschutter maakte bijna de helft van de totale doelpuntenproductie van zijn club en brak een 137 jaar oud clubrecord door liefst elf achtereenvolgende competitieduels te scoren.
Van Veen werd geboren op 1 juni 1991 in Eindhoven en doorliep de opleidingen van PSV en Helmond Sport. De spits debuteerde in het betaald voetbal voor de club uit Helmond. Van Veen voetbalde in Nederland tevens voor TOP Oss en Cambuur. In 2015 vertrok de aanvaller naar Engeland, waar hij uitkwam voor Scunthorpe United en Northampton Town. In 2021 transfereerde Van Veen naar Schotland om daar op het hoogste niveau te spelen voor Motherwell FC.
FC Groningen wist de spits echter te verleiden tot een terugkeer naar Nederland. Van Veen heeft een duidelijk doel in Groningen. Van Veen: “Ik zie FC Groningen als een mooie en grote club, met fanatieke supporters. Deze club hoort in de Eredivisie en dus is promoveren de duidelijke opdracht. Dat is waarvoor ik hier ben.”
Van Veen beseft dat de verwachtingen van de supporters in Groningen hoog zijn, gezien zijn schitterende seizoen in Schotland. “Vorig jaar heb ik me in Schotland laten zien en ik kom hier om topscorer van de competitie te worden. Er is een behoorlijke hype om mij heen ontstaan en dat heb ik uiteraard ook aan mijn teamgenoten te danken. Mocht ik ook hier topscorer worden, is dat een teamprestatie. Ik hou van aantrekkelijk voetbal spelen. De FC-supporters moeten weer met plezier naar het stadion komen en daaraan wil ik gaan bijdragen. Ik wil met doelpunten, skills, passie en strijd de mensen op de banken krijgen.”
