FC Groningen heeft Jetro Willems tot het einde van dit seizoen vastgelegd. De 28-jarige linksback was zonder contract en trainde al een week mee met de eerste selectie van de Trots van het Noorden. De 22-voudig international maakt nu op contractbasis met rugnummer 15 op zijn wedstrijdshirt het seizoen af in Euroborg.
FC Groningen en Jetro Willems gaan elkaar de komende maanden proberen te helpen. De linksbenige verdediger zat sinds september vorig jaar zonder club. Hij stond voor het laatst onder contract bij SpVgg Greuther Fürth, uitkomend in de 2. Bundesliga. Willems startte zijn carrière in Rotterdam bij Sparta en zijn voetballoopbaan leidde hem daarna langs PSV, Eintracht Frankfurt en Newcastle United. Zijn laatste club was als gezegd Greuther Fürth.
Willems speelde meer dan driehonderd wedstrijden op het hoogste niveau, waaronder dus in de 1. Bundesliga en de Premier League. Naast ervaring in de Champions League en Europa League heeft Willems tevens 22 A-interlands voor Oranje op zijn naam staan.
