FC Groningen kent een rijke geschiedenis vol culthelden en spelers die uitgroeiden tot stervoetballers. Milko Djurovski was een aanvaller van beide categorieën. Supporters in Groningen maakten voor het eerst kennis met Milko Djurovski als tegenstander van de FC. De aanvaller schoot zijn club Partizan Belgrado in 1989 eigenhandig naar de volgende ronde van de Europa Cup en schakelde FC Groningen uit. Djurovski maakte drie goals in de twee duels en zijn naam in het Oosterpark was gevestigd. Een seizoen later speelde de aanvaller in het groenwit en groeide al snel uit tot publiekslieveling. Djurovski speelde 80 wedstrijden voor de FC en maakte 31 goals.
Djurovski was cultheld en stervoetballer in één. Als één van de sterkhouders in het team onder leiding van trainer Hans Westerhof behaalde de FC de beste prestatie uit de clubgeschiedenis, 3e in de Eredivisie. De FC-supporters hielden van Djurovski en de markante aanvaller hield van zijn supporters, de club en de stad Groningen.
Met zijn spel, scorend vermogen, onnavolgbare acties en prachtige assists was Djurovski een speler om voor naar het Oosterpark te komen. Ook buiten het veld liet de aanvaller zich geregeld zien in de stad. Juist die on-Groningse houding, maakte van hem zo geliefd. Een favoriet voor velen; cultheld en ster tegelijk.
De liefde voor Djurovski is nooit overgegaan, zo bleek afgelopen seizoen toen hij eenmalig terugkeerde in Groningen. Ook de liefde van Djurovski voor zijn Groningen is nooit verdwenen. “Net als Belgrado zit Groningen in mijn hart,” aldus Djurovski. Samen met de voormalig aanvaller en onder andere schrijver Herman Sandman die een boek schreef over de man met de bijnaam Rookmagiër, kijkt FC Groningen terug op de periode van één van de meest besproken FC’ers ooit.
