FC Groningen staat voor een historische mijlpaal in de clubgeschiedenis. De Trots van het Noorden treedt vanaf het seizoen 2025/2026 met een eerste selectie toe tot de Eerste Divisie Vrouwen. Daarmee zet het een volgende grote stap in het vrouwenvoetbal. FC Groningen bouwt sinds 2021 aan een duurzaam fundament voor voetballende meiden en vrouwen die dromen van spelen in Euroborg.
De Trots van het Noorden begon in 2021 met een onderzoek naar de haalbaarheid van vrouwenvoetbal onder de vlag van FC Groningen. Deze voorverkenning resulteerde in de zomer van 2022 met de start van een meidentak binnen de FC Groningen Opleiding.
Naast een eerste selectie in de Eerste Divisie Vrouwen heeft FC Groningen met Meiden onder-17 een team geheel geïntegreerd binnen de FC Groningen Opleiding. Deze selectie speelt competitie. Voor meiden in een jongere leeftijdscategorie – onder 13 en onder -14 – is een trainingsgroep geformeerd. Zij trainen meerdere keren per week bij FC Groningen, maar spelen ook nog bij hun amateurvereniging.
De allerjongste meiden bij de FC, tot en met onder-12, spelen in de Voorselectie samen met jongens als voorloper van de Opleiding en trainen wekelijks op sportpark Corpus den Hoorn. De door FC Groningen geselecteerde voetbalsters zijn daarnaast ook nog steeds lid van hun eigen amateurvereniging. Talentvolle meiden uit de regio komen hiervoor in aanmerking door scouting of deelname aan FC Groningen gerelateerde activiteiten.
